We rely on our extremely knowledgeable volunteers who give these tours.
Come and spend a day at Hospitalfield…
Hospitalfield House is a very special 19th century Arts & Crafts house, built on the site of a medieval hostel or hospital established by the Benedictine order of monks who founded Arbroath Abbey. Our tours give an insight in to this history with a focus on the insightful 19th century vision of the artist Patrick Allan Fraser and his wife Elizabeth. At Hospitalfield the Allan Fraser’s weren’t so much creating their home but a place of learning for artists of the future. The tours touch on their legacy into the 20th and 21st centuries; the Art School which opened in 1902 and our continuing contemporary art programmes.
Our Garden Tour, on the first Saturday of the month, is led by a knowledgeable volunteer guide as they lead you around the walled garden at Hospitalfield. Designed by the horticulturalist Nigel Dunnett, and opened to the public in 2021. Our gardener has been working with volunteers and herbalist Terrill Dobson on the development of a new medicinal garden.
Our Physic Garden consists of 16 rectangular beds laid out in a traditional monastic quadrant. The beds are filled with medicinal herbs, many of which may also be considered ‘monastic’ as many would have been cultivated in monasteries or foraged by the monks living in them.
Find out more about the garden work being done here today and hear about the unique horticultural history of the site at Hospitalfield, which has been tended as a garden for over 800 years.
Saturday is the day when you can make a day of it and buy a combined ticket, taking in all the tours, we recommend that you book for lunch. Children under 12 and carers supporting the person they care for go free.
Please note that our tours will start on Friday 14th April.
Please book at least one day ahead.
