Doorways: Materials and Preparation

“Hi everyone,  I’m back again with another Free Drawing School online drawing challenge!

This past week I have been exploring the grounds of Hospitalfield House, and I have become fascinated by all of the interesting and unusual doorways.  I know what is behind some of them, but not all of them and it is these ones that I am most interested in!  I have found myself imagining what exists behind them and what mysterious and exciting secrets they may contain…

On Monday the 5 October we will be imagining what is behind these doorways.  Before Monday have a look around if you are out walking and see if you can spot any interesting or unusual doors or trapdoors that may have mysterious contents and collect materials to create drawings and collages based on these ideas. It might be helpful to take a photo if you can, but don’t worry its not essential.

Materials required:

  • Various paper and card (variety of sizes and colours)
  • Pens, pencils, paints etc
  • Other materials for collage – various old magazines and newspapers to be cut up, natural collected objects, anything else interesting you might want to include in a collage
  • Glue stick or tape
  • Craft knife or scissors

Join us again on Monday between 10am and 12pm for more information and to join in.

See you all soon!

Instructions for today’s Free Drawing School Online – Doorways

“Hi everyone, I’m glad you can join us for this weeks online drawing challenge.

Recently I have been exploring the grounds around Hospitalfield House, and I have become fascinated by all of the interesting and unusual doorways. I know what is behind some of them, but not all of them and it is these ones that I am most interested in! I have found myself imagining what exists behind them and what mysterious and exciting secrets they may contain…

Today we will be imagining what is behind these doorways. What is behind your door doesn’t have to obey the earthly laws of physics; things could be smaller or larger than in real life, things might be upside down or back to front or inside out. You could start by making a card template door that will open to reveal what is within or you could simply draw what you imagine.

Materials required:

  • Various paper and card (variety of sizes and colours)
  • Pens, pencils, paints etc – Other materials for collage
  • Various old magazines and newspapers to be cut up, natural collected objects, anything else interesting you might want to include in a collage
  • Glue stick or tape
  • Craft knife or scissors

I can’t wait to see what you come up with! See you all soon”
