The Free Drawing School invites groups and members of the public to take part in a programme of experimental drawing inspired by Hospitalfield’s historic walled gardens. Drawing takes place in the studios, historic rooms, woodland and gardens.
Each year the Free Drawing School is led by an artist through an annual artist commission. The artist leading the Free Drawing School in 2020-21 is artist Kirsty McKeown.
These classes will happen at Hospitalfield and in Arbroath alongside our online guest artist drawing challenges.
Classes will be located at Hospitalfield, Westway, Arbroath, DD11 2NH. Sessions will take place in five blocks.
Block One, each Monday 10am-12pm, from 19 October to 23 November 2020.
Attendance is limited to 8 participants and activity is socially distanced. We have robust systems in place that align with the existing Government guidelines on Covid-19 and community learning.
Please complete the registration form below for block one. Participants are encouraged to attend each class and can only attend one block to allow another group of participants to attend following blocks.
About the Artist
Kirsty McKeown is an artist based in Dundee. She graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone in 2012. Recent projects have focused on the influence of war-time Britain on the changing roles of women at work, with specific reference to four factors: political, physical, industrial and domestic. She works with materials and processes including college, printmaking, analogue photography and altered objects; using found materials and her immediate environment as inspiration.
McKeown will spend the year developing her own work and generating a welcoming workshop environment for participants that will encourage experimentation as they work alongside her; with activities including the creation of drawing tools and camera-less photography. She is interested in gathering an understanding about place through seeing, learning and drawing here in the garden at Hospitalfield.
