2014 saw the first Hospitalfield international summer school. We worked with Isla Leaver-Yap to devise and programme this event.

FIELDWORK: REPORTS ON EVENT CURATING, was a three-day conversation to unpack the curatorial presentation of durational art work — namely: the event.

FIELDWORK addressed the mechanics behind event production: the use of the event as a short-circuit within or an alternative to the space of exhibition production; the changing intentions of documentation in shaping the event, both prior to and as postscript; the role of curatorial qualifications and schooling in engendering customised knowledge about and established formats for the event; and the conflicts between the arrival of the event and the location in which it occurs.

With reports by international curators Isla Leaver-Yap, Fionn Meade, Sam Korman, Vivian Ziherl; and parallel conversations hosted by Gerrie Van Noord and Sarah Cook that explored the role of the event in local contexts, FIELDWORK examined the event as a space of circulation and becoming.


Fionn Meade posed and reported on the question “what is the time of production?” In this current period of instant historicisation, Meade asked how curators might respond to this symptom within the framework of the contemporary art event, and questioned the ways in which young curators are prepared for the cross-disciplinarity required of event production.

Meade is a curator and writer based in New York and Minneapolis. He is Senior Curator of Cross-Disciplinary Platforms at the Walker Art Center, and is a faculty member at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, and in the MFA program for Visual Arts, Columbia University. Recent exhibitions include The Assistants at David Kordansky Gallery, Plaisance at Midway Contemporary Art, and Coming to Reality at Futura and SVIT (Prague, Czech Republic). He was previously curator at Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; and SculptureCenter, NY, where exhibitions included Scene, Hold, Ballast, with David Maljkovic and Lucy Skaer, and the exhibitions Time Again and Knight’s Move, a survey of new sculpture in New York. His writing appears inArtforumBombBidounFillipMousseModern PaintersParkett, and Spike, among others. He is the recipient of the Arts Writer Grant from Creative Capital and the Andy Warhol Foundation.


Sam Korman presented a personal report on One Nite Stand, a karaoke bar in St Louis, Missouri. One Nite Stand presents a space in which ideas surrounding audience, arts institutions, participation, temporary utopias, pop music, authority, and class become porous situations.

Korman was born in Buffalo, New York, and has worked in Portland, Marfa, New York and St. Louis. He is currently the assistant director of White Flag Projects, St Louis. Korman contributes texts to ArtLiesBOMBlogPastelegram, and numerous books and exhibition catalogues. He was the founder and director of Car Hole Gallery, which operated between 2009-2010. The collected writings from Car Hole can be found in Notes From A Young Curator, published by Publication Studio. Korman was awarded the 2013/14 Lorenzo Bonaldi Prize for International Curators. His forthcoming exhibition series Mississippi will open at GAMeC Bergamo in September 2014.


Vivian Ziherl spoke across three projects that include a publication project, a performance series, and an ongoing research project. Taking place across varied institutional settings and collaborations, the studies were linked through the refrain of locatedness – in geography, in time and as subject unto itself.

Ziherl is Curator at If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want to Be Part Of Your Revolution, Amsterdam. Recent projects include Landings (with Natasha Ginwala) at Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art and partner organisations including Rietveld Academie Studium Generale, Tropenmuseum Amsterdam, Stedelik Museum Amsterdam, BARBERSHOP, Campo Adentro and David Roberts Art Foundation, among others and StageIt! Part 1 & 2 (with Hendrik Folkerts) at the Stedelijk Museum, 2012/2013. Ziherl was the founding contributing editor of Discipline Magazine, and her writing has appeared in periodicals including Friezee-flux JournalWitte de With Review, Pages MagazineLEAP MagazineMetropolis MEyeline and the Journal of Art (Art Association of Australia and New Zealand). Ziherl is the recent recipient of a curatorial fellowship with Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane.


Sarah Cook is the co-founder of the CRUMB resource for curators of media art, which has for over 10 years hosted discussions about curatorial work, online and off. A graduate of Bard College’s Center for Curatorial Studies, and a former curatorial intern at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Cook worked for many years at The Banff Centre in Canada where she co-founded the Banff International Curatorial Institute and organised, contributed to and edited symposia and publications. Co-author of the book Rethinking Curating: Art After New Media (MIT Press, 2010), Cook is currently Dundee Fellow at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design. Recent exhibitions include: Not Even the Sky – Thomson & Craighead (MEWO Kunstalle, Memmingen), Biomediations (Transitio Festival, Laboratorio Arte Alameda, Mexico City), and The Affect is due to the Effects (Videographe, Montreal).


Gerrie van Noord has an MA in Art History from the University of Amsterdam. Before moving to the UK in 1996, Gerrie worked at the Rijksakademie voor beeldende kunsten (1988-1992) and subsequently at De Appel Foundation (1992-1996), where she was exhibitions organiser and helped establish its Curatorial Training Programme. Between 1997 and 2002 she was Head of Publishing at Artangel in London. In 2002-2003 she was Project Manager for Zenomap, Scotland’s first independent presentation at the Venice Biennale. Subsequently she worked as a researcher for the Scottish Arts Council and the Glasgow School of Art on what would become PAR+RS. Between 2006 and 2009 she was commissioning editor of a three-year long co-publishing project entitled ‘Fabrications’, published by Book Works. As a freelance editor (and sometimes translator) she has worked with a wide range of artists and organisations. Gerrie has been a Visiting Lecturer at the MFA of the Glasgow School of Art since 2003. She is Associate Lecturer at the MA Arts Policy & Management at Birkbeck, University of London, and also lectures on the MA in the History and Business of the Contemporary Art Market, IEASA/Warwick University.
