Drawing & Text: Jade Montserrat Studio Time Workshop

5 March 2021

Artist Jade Montserrat and Hospitalfield invite you to participate in two workshops as part of the development of her Studio Time Commission. Jade Montserrat is an artist based in Scarborough, who exhibits and runs workshops around the UK and internationally. In her practice she works through performance, drawing, painting, film, installation, sculpture, print and text.

Drawing & Text Workshop, Friday 5th March, 5:30pm GMT
Listening & Speaking Workshop, Friday 12th March, 5:30pm GMT

In the workshops participants will explore text and charcoal as materials through centring listening, drawing and speech. Jade has devised the workshops to build conversations and develop ideas, to inform the production of new work by bringing people together.

The workshops will extend Montserrat’s premise that drawing is a mode of being or operating. Participants will be guided by the questions: “What does it mean to survey and reclaim ‘environments’ – our relationship to space? Where is the potential for reclaiming belonging?”

Both workshops encourage diverse attendance; Montserrat invites people local to Hospitalfield, nation-wide, and internationally, of different ages, generations and contexts to join-in. We’ve made thirty places available for each workshop. We invite you to sign up by the 26th February to receive your charcoal pack.

Special thanks is given to Alexandra Moore (curator and PhD candidate at University of California, Santa Cruz) and colleagues at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design and Grays School of Art in helping us to facilitate a group of participants from across Scotland, the UK and in California.

Drawing and Text Workshop: Friday 5th March, 5:30pm

Participants in this workshop will be guided to relax into drawing. Jade asserts that there is a connection between ourselves and the earth: This line, or connection, like our communications with one another, is drawing. In this workshop, she seeks to visualise, together, exchanges of energy, lines, communications, and with that, consider stewarding of our spaces.

Charcoal will be used to mediate relations between drawing, text and performance. The use of recycled or found materials is encouraged. A central focus of the workshop will be to think and draw beyond paper and consider conceptual, performative and site-specific drawing, listening and conversation.

Listening and Speaking Workshop: Friday 12th March, 5:30pm

…the mouth as a “chief aperture” that gathers in while pushing out, to link and chart all sorts of relations, presents a range of means literally carving out a space for individual presence.

This workshop aims to explore relationships between language and subject, and our remote acoustic experiences. It will be centred on methods for valuing listening as a form of active participation – listening, in this instance, is considered a form of empathy and care. Participants will be encouraged to actively draw language through their body as collective release. The workshop will culminate in a collective reading, spoken in unison.

How to Sign Up

When you sign up, you’ll be asked for your address so that we can send you a pack by post which will include charcoal. We invite you to sign up for the workshop by 26 February so we can make sure these arrive in time. The workshops will happen via a live zoom meeting and you will be asked to have your cameras and microphones on at various times during the workshops.

You’ll also be asked to respond to the question “Why are you registering to participate in this workshop?” – this will help Jade to understand who is participating and guide how she facilitates the workshops.
