‘In the Garden at Hospitalfield we are led through time from the garden’s medieval origins to the present day. Over eight centuries we meet monks and pilgrims, wealthy families and famous artists, and unearth the plants that helped shape this historic space.’
A new publication and major outcome of the Free Drawing School; a graphic novel drawn and written by the illustrator Laura Darling. Hilariously describing 800 years of the history of the Hospitalfield gardens, from the plague to the pandemic and lots in between, a wonderful outcome from Darling’s year long residency running the Free Drawing School at Hospitalfield.
Laura ran the Free Drawing School as artist in residency from 2019-20 and initiated with Hospitalfield the first three Free Drawing School Online Challenges in March 2020.
Born in Fife, Laura grew up in the Scottish Borders and studied Illustration at Edinburgh College of Art. She has lived and worked in Dundee since 2007. Laura’s practice is guided by noticing and she uses illustration as a means of understanding her surroundings; people; places; histories. Being directed by observation leads her to illustrate myriad topics that may delight, educate, amuse or challenge. Primarily working in pencil, paint and ink, Laura combines hand-drawn layers using traditional and digital printing methods, creating playful and engaging illustrations.
The Free Drawing School and In the Garden at Hospitalfield are made possible with generous funding support from The Robertson Trust and The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
