DRAWING CHALLENGE: Mick Peter’s Pop Up Pictures

This challenge is set by Mick Peter. Mick is an artist who makes knotty and playful objects, drawings and installations that investigate symbols of power and authority. We are working with Mick on the 2021 Annual Sculpture Commission.

Instructions:

  2. REVEAL – draw a scene that create’s a new scene when you open up. Surprise!
  3. HIGH TECH ANIMATION – Animate two drawings using this ‘High Tech’ method.

For 1 & 2 – WIDER/TALLER or WIDER/LONGER or REVEAL:

  • Carefully cut your A4 paper in half and cut or rip length-ways to form a long strip.
  • Fold this strip in half.
  • Turn the paper over and fold back edges to meet the centre crease.
  • Now, take the two wings you’ve made and make sure folds A and B are touching and aligned.
  • Keeping A + B together squash the your paper flat to make two more folds.
  • To make the image pop out bring fold A+B together and then pull the whole thing open to reveal what’s in the drawing.

For 3 – HIGH TECH ANIMATION:

  • Carefully cut your A4 paper in half and cut or rip length-ways to form a long strip.
  • Fold this strip in half.
  • Unfold and draw the second part of the animation first in a nice dark pen.
  • Fold in half again, using the image you can see through the paper draw the other frame of your animation.
  • When you’re done roll the top sheet tightly round a pencil.
  • Flick the paper back and forth to animate the drawing.
