Arbroath 2020: Festival Programme & Artist Fund Announcement

23 October 2019

The Arbroath 2020 Committee and Hospitalfield invite you to the Webster Memorial Theatre on Wednesday 23 October for the Announcement of the Arbroath 2020 Festival Programme and the launch of the Arbroath 2020 Fund for Angus Artists.

2020 marks the 700th anniversary of the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath. In this period Arbroath Abbey and the town that grew up around it was right at the heart of Scotland’s power and politics. The Declaration travelled to Arbroath gaining support on its way until it was floated off from Arbroath Harbour to the Pope in Avignon on the 6th April 1320.

Now regarded as an eloquent statement on freedom, the document sows the seeds for the first ideas of democracy. This is our starting point for the Arbroath 2020 Festival.

Announcing the Arbroath 2020 Festival

Arbroath 2020 is a programme of events to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath. Arbroath 2020 is a six month long programme of cultural and creative activity with a commissioned programme supported by an array of activity generated through the community programme.

The Arbroath 2020 Festival website will launch on 18 October – www.Arbroath2020.com – where the programme of events can be found, along with information on special projects and how to get involved.

Arbroath 2020 Fund for Angus Artists

Bringing Bright Ideas to the Arbroath 2020 Festival

The Arbroath 2020 Festival is offering project grants of between £250 and £1000 to artists who have an idea that they would like to develop and realise under the banner of the 2020 Festival. The fund is a total of £10,000 and will be distributed through two ‘open calls’, one in November and the other in February.

Arbroath 2020 Festival is celebrating Arbroath and its future through its history. Your project does not need to be linked directly to the history of the Declaration, this fund is about artist development so we are interested in how this can be a good project that will support the artist(s) and their work whilst also making a strong contribution to the Festival. The Festival programme is extremely wide reaching in terms of themes and topics.

The Fund for Angus Artists is open to artists working in all disciplines and who are living and working in Angus. We look forward to receiving applications from a wide range of creative practitioners and crafts people, including writers, film makers, musician, performers, poets, visual artists and more.

The Fund for Angus Artists has been made possible through The Arbroath 2020 Festival with funding from Creative Scotland’s Angus Place Partnership and Angus Council.
