New painting, sculpture and animation by Stephanie Hier is on show between 16 June and 21 July 2018 at the gallery in Glasgow’s east end.
The exhibition, entitled Walnuts and pears you plant for your heirs, has come out of a collaboration between Hospitalfield and Royal Over-Seas League, which creates the opportunity for UK galleries to research international artists and invite them to develop work for a public project. Hier came to Scotland for a month-long residency at Hospitalfield in September 2017 and site visits with David Dale Gallery.
The exhibition includes paintings on hand dyed linen, drawing on Hier’s long term subject matter crossing from classical painting to traditional cartoons. The paintings are presented here within ceramic frames or within larger displays incorporating wall graphics. Hier is also exhibiting a new video work filmed in an oil paint factory, showing the churning of pure pigment, overlaid with a skipping, animated figure.
David Dale Gallery has also asked Hier to make a permanent work for their courtyard space and will retain one of her small cast concrete sculptures on the walls of that space after the exhibition has closed.
