Free Drawing School 12 month residency

Hospitalfield will appoint an artist-in-residence to continue to shape and run the Free Drawing School over a 12 month period. The Free Drawing School is a three year project of experimental drawing at Hospitalfield and is a core part of our on-going programme. We appoint an artist each year to take on the role.

The core theme or starting point for the Drawing School is the 800 year history of the gardens and fernery. The gardens are in the process of being re-designed, the fernery restored and the walled gardens opened to the public. This project has been devised to rung alongside this capital programme of investment at Hospitalfield. The artist will have access to the specialists that we are working with;  garden designer Nigel Dunnett and the fern specialists, based at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh, who are working with us to develop a new collection of ferns. We anticipate that the School will be based on the artist’s practice and ideas yet your application should consider these themes and reflect a core interest in exploring this horticultural history and drawing others in to this fascinating world through drawing.

The appointed artist will be supported by the team at Hospitalfield and will develop the project with key groups of people in Arbroath and beyond, many that we already have strong working relationships with. Now that the School has been running for a year there is a community of interest gathered around the project. During the period of their residency, the artist will be provided with a free studio at Hospitalfield where they can spend time developing their work and be in conversation with the diverse community of artists that come to Hospitalfield’s busy programme.

We are now inviting applications from artists based in Dundee and the DD postcode to be the commissioned residency artist for Year Two of the Free Drawing School.

We ask for the artist to commit 16 hours per week focus on developing the school and working with participants.

The fee based on a part time contract of £24,000 Pro Rata

Exact working times to be agreed, the artist will be required to participate during our Summer Festival in June-July 2019 and the open weekends in April and September. These dates will be agreed during the proposal/interview process.
